Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been stories all over the media about higher weight people being at higher risk for COVID-related complications. Now vaccine rollout plans are being created and in many places in the U.S., including New York and California, higher weight people are being prioritized along with other high-risk groups for vaccination.
Of course there’s an outcry amongst fatphobes, but setting aside their predictable, bigotry-based whining, this is causing a lot of mixed feelings amongst fat people themselves.
The bottom line is that if you are fat and want the vaccine, you should not feel even a tiny bit guilty for getting it as soon as you are eligible. While the research is absolutely not clear about whether or not fat bodies themselves create higher risk, we know for sure that Weight stigma in medical care puts us at higher risk, and higher risk should mean higher priority for vaccination.

6 thoughts on “Dear Fat People – Don’t Feel Guilty About Getting Vaccinated”
Ya think they’d be goin off their nut having this to point to? You, Fat People Death! And run away.
Fem. Do what’s best FOR YOU!
That’s actually a great point. I’d also point out that the fatphobes screaming that you’re “taking the vaccine away from people who deserve it more” if you get the vaccine would be screaming “you don’t even care enough about your health and the health of the people around you to get a little preventative shot” if you didn’t get the vaccine. You can’t base your decisions on what you think will pacify an abusive person, because nothing will.
Absolutely this – there is nothing that fatphobes are better at than creating a lose/lose situation for fat people (I mean golly gosh darn do they make it seem like harming fat people is the actual point and they don’t care about our health at all….)
They’re doing it again! So, I turned on DEBRIS, hoping for some cool sci-fi distraction and…wait for it…there is a Fat Kid. Campbell’s soup cute-leading people to their deaths…Fat equals bad. Part seven thousand nine hundred forty-four…
Do adults ever ask themselves why they feel so comfortable treating fat children like shit when they’d recoil in horror at the idea of treating a thin child the same way?
I doubt it, to the point where it would be mind-boggling to then to even bring it up…
